How to learn spoken Kannada in Bengaluru

Most people who move to Bengaluru pick up a handful of Kannada words and then stall. Not because the language is hard, but because they never practise saying it out loud to anyone. Here is what actually works.

Start with speaking, not the alphabet

Kannada has a beautiful script, and learning it is worthwhile — later. If your goal is to be understood at a vegetable stall or by an auto driver this month, the script is a detour. Spoken Kannada and written Kannada also differ: what people say on the street is not the formal register you would read in a textbook.

The six words that do the most work

You do not need hundreds of words to get through a day. You need a small number that combine well.

Kannada word order will trip you up

Kannada puts the verb at the end. “I want water” becomes ನೀರು ಬೇಕು (nīru bēku) — literally “water want”. If you are coming from Hindi this will feel familiar; from English it takes a few days to stop reversing it.

Practise being wrong in private

The real barrier is not vocabulary. It is that saying a new language badly, in front of a stranger, in a queue, is uncomfortable — so people default to English and never start. The fix is somewhere to be wrong repeatedly where nobody is waiting and nobody switches to English out of politeness.
